It's the price of the CCD that is the difference. In quantities of one, the mono CCD costs $80 USD each, the color CCD costs $22USD and the 1/3" CYMG color CCD used in the Meade DSI imager are $25 each.


The reason for the difference between the mono and color CCD (they are the same chip - except for the color CCD has a bayer color filter layer) is basically because of volume. Their is much more demand for color CCD's than mono CCD's in this size and format.
