Orange Micro and ADS did the above - they split the cost of development on their FireWire Cameras. The boards are almost exactly the same as far as layout goes and other than cosmetic changes (the name on the board) that's it. The development costs are not trivial.

Not now with Apple's iSight out their. Actually shortly after Apple did the iSight, most companies stopped any future production them and EOL'd all of them. The only exception was Unibrain who are still producing cameras.
