Subject: Re: home made adapter

Hi folks:

been away for a while.

My Aplux version of the fire-i has the smaller lens mount, and I remember that the

Unibrain website didn't have specs on the mount for the cased camera.

I would think that the simplest thing to do would be to change the lens mount to the

12mm size, so that the Mogg adapters will work.

Better still would be to start with the board camera and make a case for it (or use some

sort of project box for a case).

Hi Pat;

Well maybe I am wrong then - they don't state what the Boxed camera

uses for a mount at

http://www.unibrain.com/1394_products/fire-i_dig_cam/

digital_camera_mac.htm

or here

http://www.unibrain.com/support/tech_specs/fire-i_camera/tech_specs.htm

I also thought they had discontinued the "boxed" model when they

couldn't get plastic cases anymore.

It's weird that their board level cameras use a completely different

housing and mount than this other camera does, because the picture of

the board camera housing at:

http://www.1394store.com/eshop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=55&pf%5Fid=2051

doesn't look at all like the one for the Boxed camera shows. One

would think economies of scale would mean they would adapt the same

standard.

So which camera did you buy Willie? Was it the boxed cameras as shown

above or the Board Level Camera with the $6.00 case?

In case some one wants to compare, I measured my M12x0.5m mounts here

and the outside diameter of it is 14 mm or 0.55 inches. The Inner rim

edge is 12.5 mm or 0.49 inches.

Sorry about the confusion..

Hello Milton,

The camera was purchased from 1394store.com in early June, so it's

pretty recent.  S/N 0040042144.

Hi Pat;

How old is this unibrain camera your talking about then?

The ADS Pyro camera I had used a 10mm diam lens on it. That lens

would drop completely inside (without touching the walls) of the

unibrain cameras I have here.

Also i have a Kritter USB camera here and the Unibrain Cameras

(including the packaged one) I have here are interchangeable and all

M12x0.5mm.

The plot thickens..

Sorry, one more follow-up.  Just ran down to our machine shop to

measure the (packaged) Fire-i lens mount.  It's M10x1.0 (1.0 cm

O.D.,

1/mm thread pitch).  I've shot an email off to Steven Mogg to

see if

he can machine an adapter for that conveniently.  Will post

when I get

a reply.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to confirm that the packaged unibrain fire-i with

case (as

opposed to the board camera version) does have a nonstandard

lens

mount, NOT M12x0.5.  I've had to fashion my own adapter as

well, as

the Mogg UWAL-F does not fit.

He's wrong and yes it does fit. The thread is precisely

M12 x 0.5

(I

measured it and Canada is Metric). Also the engineering and

manufacturing diagrams from Unibrain clearly state they

use an

M12x0.5m. Also on the Unibrain website

Thanks Milton.  So I guess I will go ahead and order his

longest

M12x0.5 adapter.
