Number 2 is what I am hoping is true :)


2) is too true. The old saying you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear applies here too. That said, the tools available today and the advancement in the collective skill level of today's imagers is allowing some pretty amazing results from middle of the road seeing conditions. 


Your saturn image is very nice. Hint - you can use the RGB data taken on one night for quite a long period of time as color data with new luminance images. The color of saturn is subtle and doesn't change much - the biggest change will be in the size and position of the shadows cast by the planet and its rings.
