Subject: Re: Mars image Nov 13/05 - advice?

I just re-read this thread and realized what I wrote —DOH!!!

Replace "I am by far an expert" with "I am far from being an expert..."

Not even a freudian slip, more of a motor over mind thing. Not the first stupid thing I've

accidentally typed, and won't be the last either. Hope you don't mind putting up with me.

Hi Jim,

I am by far an expert, but here is what my book smarts might say about that...

5x might be too much at 76mm aperture) I'm starting to think it's a bit too much with

my

100mm.

Try a 2x and then go a little more (?) just to see how it turns out.

If you're not using IR, you need to throw that in.

Last but not least I think that your shot looks like most of my shots and this might be

100% seeing conditions. Keep getting out there and pray for clear seeing.

Hi all,

This is probably my best attempt at imaging Mars through my 17 year old TV 76mm

Oracle refractor - a triplet apochromatic.  I simply cannot get any more detail and I

think the focus is optimized as is the brightness.  Is this simply a function of small

aperture?

Again taken through a 5x Powermate at approx f37, 120 ms exposure stacking at

80% confidence level with a Unibrain webcam.  BTW there was some discussion than

the Unibrain has a nonstandard thread/size and I know for that reason that Mogg

won't make an adaptor for it.  I found some plastic electrical conduit threaded pieces

that you screw directly into the webcam case (after removing lens assembly)  and

some light sanding brings it 1.25 " size.
