Hi Duane;

Is it my imagination or does the ideal saturation change depending on the other values I've

The Red Gain, Blue Gain and Brightness (which amplifies red, blue and green intensity)  all increase or decrease the color intensity. So if you have low Red or low Blue or low Brightness then the Saturation affect will not be as noticeable as it would be with them placed at maximum value. You can get the same thing if you have an intense, largely monochromatic light source (ie Mars is largely a red monochromatic light source), which will be the same as if you had cranked the red gain to maximum.

So the best way to minimize the problem is to color balance the image first and then adjust the saturation slider to minimize the noise. And using the 4x pixel zoom will make the issue very apparent too, as it simply scales up the pixels with no interpolation or smoothing.
