Duane:

I've used the 8x pixel zoom.  It's fantastic in preparation for imaging DSOs with the Flea - I

don't even need a particularly bright star.  And I can focus at the telescope and still see the

monitor several feet away.

Seeing will be garbage this week due to the Santa Ana winds we're having.  So I may set up

outside with the C-8 or the Jaegers and shoot some DSOs over the next few nights.  I need

to see how sensitive the Flea really is.

Good idea. I haven't used the 4x pixel zoom. It has now snowed here, and who knows

when the sky will ever be visible again :(

The Red Gain, Blue Gain and Brightness (which amplifies red, blue and

green intensity)  all increase or decrease the color intensity. So if

you have low Red or low Blue or low Brightness then the Saturation

affect will not be as noticeable as it would be with them placed at

maximum value. You can get the same thing if you have an intense,

largely monochromatic light source (ie Mars is largely a red

monochromatic light source), which will be the same as if you had

cranked the red gain to maximum.

So the best way to minimize the problem is to color balance the image

first and then adjust the saturation slider to minimize the noise.

And using the 4x pixel zoom will make the issue very apparent too, as

it simply scales up the pixels with no interpolation or smoothing.

Not too be too heavy handed here, but it was the Saturation control

not the Red gain that caused it. This only applies to the low end

inexpensive cameras have the Saturation control. The way Saturation

is implemented is that it uses a convolution algorithm in the

TSLBV1501 chip set and it doesn't work very well, except to increase

noise levels.

Hope That helps..
