Subject: Re: [Astro_IIDC] Re: Fire-i camera CCD defect

Hi Jim;

If Sony would publish a list of CCD's that are affected instead of camera models, they would be helping a lot of people, partners and companies out, but I suspect they don't know which are affected. The only thing we know for "sure" right now is that  it can affect all Sony CCD's that are in plastic / resin epoxy mounts and it does not affect ceramic mounted (more expensive) CCDs. From the description of the problem (iodine adhesive leaking out from the glass cover over the CCD and then further weakening the already weakened wire solder joints), it would be a crap shoot to determine which CCD's are affected. Under high heat or pressure or vibration, the CCD may fail. Also it only seems to affect only the Color CCD's too, however that could just be a volume thing (ie Sony sells lots more Monochrome CCD's than Color CCD's).

Sony is sending companies replacement CCD's for the failed one, but I'm sure you can you imagine the carnage this will cause to a manufacturers bottom line.

Milton,

Thanks for the additional info. The 1394store made it look like it was just the Fire-i that

was effected but looking at this further info...seems a lot more cameras are indeed

involved. I guess, I'll just stick with the ibot for now till I hear its ok to start looking at

another camera.
