Hi Milton,

I'm new to the group and in the process of choosing a camera. After

reading through the messages, I'm leaning to the Dragonfly2 from Pt

Grey. I just wanted to point out that both the Flea and Dragonfly2

are available either with the 7.4 micron (640 x 480) or 4.65 micron

(1024 x 768)pixel Sony imagers.  The Dragonfly 2 is also capable of

12 bit like the Flea.  I think I'll be going with the larger pixel,

lower res mono version.  Thanks for the group - lots of good info

here.

Yep - very true. You can get the Flea or the DragonFly2 with either a 7.4 micron / 640x480 CCD  or a 4.65 micron / 1024x768 CCD. The comparison images of the moon were just to show the difference that the CCD Pixel Size makes with resolution, field of view and exposure time.

Currently I don't recommend the Dragonfly2 Color Camera but that may change in the future as PGR is looking at adding a register to force it into a "bayer" color camera. Also I've asked Point Grey if they could look at allowing us to power the Sony CCD amp off via a software switch for longer exposures. The TI TSLV1501 chip had some low level register hooks that I could hack into for this, but not in the PGR cameras.

Some day when I "win" a lottery, I'd like to get a 9.9 micron Scorpion monochrome camera, which has 179% of the light gathering capability that my Flea 7.4 micron has and 453% more than a 4.65 micron CCD can do. Of course if I win a lottery I'll finally be able to get a bigger scope, a good mount (which doesn't have a RA PEC error measuring 90 arc seconds over 5 minutes of time) and buy a place where I can set up an observatory (probably in Saskatchewan).
