Is this with the AutoStar hand controller or not? If so which one? And you are connecting the KeySpan USB Serial adapter to the RS232 port on the hand controller right?

The scope has to respond to the LX200 command sets for Slew Motion (i.e :Qe# :Qn# :Qs# :Qw#) and Slew Rate (i.e. :RC# :RS# etc. ) controls. So it works on the Meade RX, Meade LX, Meade ETX, Vixen with (hacked) SkySensor 2000PC controller scopes.
