Subject: Re: [Astro_IIDC] Astro IIDC 3.00.01 available

Milton,

Thanks for the kind remarks.  It's nice to hear them from someone who knows what's involved in animating multiple shots.   The thought of using Astro IIDC 4.0 to animate images sounds intriguing but I'm still trying to benefit from the new features in 3.01.  I've bookmarked your astrophoto page and am very impressed with the images and the work that went into them.  Please keep us posted as to any new additions.

Thanks for the quick fix, I sure am glad I wasn't imaging between 12:00 and 2:00 last night!

Unfortunately (for me - not for everyone else), I was out imaging then. I was shooting M5 and the clouds rolled in at around 1 am, so I packed it in and then decided to stack and align what I just shot. Ran into the bug, had to recompile Astro IIDC, test it on a second Mac to make sure it was actually fixed, then create the dmg installer, then update the web site and finally upload everything. Makes for a late night.

Last Saturday night I was treated to a night of good seeing and took the opportunity to image Jupiter through a 3.5" Maksutov and a Quantum 6 scope.  I put together a short animation showing the transit of Europa and a hint of Red Jr.  I used Quicktime to make a movie from 16 LRGB images, you can find it at the following address.  This was very time consuming and i will be looking for a way to automate the process!

Phenomenal shots for a 3.5" scope. I was thinking about adding alignment and animation tools Astro IIDC 4. I built a hacked version of Astro IIDC which generated the raw Mars movie footage (not the labeling etc.)

I used a much earlier version to align these frames of the Jupiter triple shadow event into a movie (236 final frames - total of 59,000 processed)

and this double shadow one too:

Write up on what went into them is described in the 2004 Movies and Images section at

Also, I captured a few decent images with the Quantum scope that can be seen a the bottom of the following page.

Again great shots and thanks for sharing.
