Phil, Jon - Thanks for your comments.

Jon - I use both Astro IIDC and Keith's Image Stacker for frame selection and stacking.

Astro IIDC version 3.0 - which incorporates the ability to create multiple stacks from the

same selection of frames - works really well when the raw data has enough contrast and

high enough S/N. This Jupiter image was problematic because of poor transparency - the

frames captured through red and blue filters are quite noisy at the image scale I used. I

got better results with this data by hand selecting the frames.

Seeing in my area is rarely better than 6/10 on a good night - there is a lot of morphing of

the image shape and sharpness across the chip. Aligning the stacks on different regions

produces an improvement - most noticeably on the moon and the sun - but also on

planetary images at a large image scale - I use this technique almost all the time,

combining the different pieces together and doing final processing in Photoshop.

best -

Alan

Hi Alan,

I'd be interested in knowing some of your processing steps as that, as well

as your previous image, are some excellent final products!  How you stacked,

aligned, etc and any programs used other than Astro IIDC?

Thanks,

Jon
