What may help is plugging a FireWire 400 cable in the Mac Laptop besides the FireWire 800 one. It may provide some support for lateral motion, and sure seems to help on mine. The FireWire 800 plug without those screws to hold it in place is your "Weakest Link".


Oddly enough, I just searched through a bunch of FW800 CardBus units and not one of them showed screw holes.


And speaking of stiff, you should try using those FW 800 cables at -25 centigrade.
