Thanks.  hmmm,  I may have to hijack my son's G5 imac (pre-intel)

for processing!

Hi Ron;

Just to clarify.

Performance wise (we've benchmarked this in time trials), Astro

IIDC

3.x on a dual core 1.83 gighz x86 Intel Mac Mini (Core Duo 2

processor 1 gig of Ram) under Rosetta runs about the same speed as

a

single CPU G4 1.25 gigahz Mac Laptop. So there really is not much

difference between a G4 and x86 Laptop at all. In Apple's latest

Laptops it should run somewhat faster as they have faster busses,

faster  and better hard drives and better Video throughput.

The only negative factor is that when you first launch Astro

IIDC,

the Rosetta emulation software translates the PowerPC code into

x86

code and that causes a delay. Once it's all translated it runs

fine

but there is an initial delay at launch.

So there should be no real reason why you would not go for the

x86

Dual Core Laptops over an older G4 Laptop if your planning on

using

it for years to come.

However on a G5 processor, Rosetta x86 gets smoked pretty badly

by

about 50% to 100%.

HTH..

This sounds great!  I've been fence-sitting trying to decide if I

should get a used G4 primarily for IIDC or a Macbook and live

with

rosetta. There is so much new, good astro-software, (Stark-Labs,

Bisque, etc.,) coming out for the intel Mac, this is  more good

news. now the decision is simple.
