Subject: Re: Comet 17P Holmes

Hello everybody

What a cool comet, the brightness is so high I had no problem spotting

it in bright moonlight.

The right object for the first light of my Imaging Source camera using

Astro IIDC. Monochrome since the colour movies were corrupted...

Here my result:

Hi to all,

I saw 17P/Holmes last evening standing in my driveway

in a light-polluted sky (from the urban Augusta, GA

area plus all the surrounding 'burbs) with the full

moon to the right.  Time was 9:30 p.m. ET.

There were also some thin high clouds.

I saw the comet first through my Adlerblick 8X42

binocs.  The circular coma around the center could be

seen.  Then, knowing exactly where it was, I could

visually see it, but that was just about it because of

conditions.

The binocs made for a very enjoyable and easy and

interesting viewing!  If conditions permit tonight,

I'll get the Orion 80ED scope out and try it.

Hi Milton -

Thanks for posting the announcement for this. The

news spread quickly.

I captured data first at 3.7 meters (the native FL

of my 10" mak) -

then added a .67 reducer to record the stars. My

planetary set-up is

in need of a polar alignment tweak - nasty star

trails over 5 seconds

exposure at this focal length. I think we might have

an opportunity

for another look tonight (sat up til 4:30 fiddling

with the pictures

so I need a nap!)

I'm hoping snow is still a ways out for us - I have

more porch

painting to do...

best,

Alan

Hi Alan;

Very Cool. What focal lenght were you using?

I wonder what it will do tonight as the bright

material expands

outwards. Might deliver a bigger brighter tail.

I was going to get the spotting scope and have a

look from the

parking lot (I can only see to the south off the

balcony with the

C8), but it was hard to see more than 50 feet in

the blizzard that

dumped snow on us last night.
