Ray, I own an 1979 Quantum 6 telescope made by Optical Techniques Inc. It is a 6" f/15 Maksutov, but you knew that. ;-)
Chris, I agree that is one of the best sides of Mars. With the unpredictable weather, it's hard to plan on imaging a certain side.
I reprocessed the RGB images today and think I made an improvement to the 12/21/07 Mars image but after looking at it for hours, maybe any change looked like an improvement. I've linked to both below. I also put together an image showing the RGB and L images. What do you think?

I think you have been very sensitive in your processing it's the kind of look which seems just right to me anyway. about 11:45 EST. This time a luminance layer was added to the RGB
color image. Two thousand frames were recorded for the luminence
through an IR block filter and about 1000 frames were captured for
each color. A stack of 280 were processed for the L layer and about
200 for each color. Final image asembly was done in Photoshop as was
the multiple unsharp masking and Gaussian blurring. Levels, curves
and hue/saturation were adjusted also.
I have three more sets to process and a Moon image. If any turn out
