Actually, if you use a layer mask, and then just paint with a fuzzy brush, you can get the 

same affect with a bonus feature. You can unmask whenever you want.


At the bottom of your layers pallet, there is an add layer mask button. Then, with the layer 

mask selected, choose your paintbrush (50% or less hardness) and use the [ and ] buttons to 

change the size of your brush ( [ = smaller, ] = larger). Paint with black and the photo disappears where you pain (or correctly termed, is masked).


If you over mask, you can change the paint to white and erase parts of the mask.


It basically gives you more control over what you want or don't want to show.
