Okay guys, this is interesting...

I took out the hard drive, put a battery back in and connected the

power adapter.  Now, when I turn the computer on, it immediately goes

to the "folder with a question mark" icon and spins up the startup

disk.  But it keeps spinning up the disk and spinning it down again. 

It never boots off it.

My wife had a "toilet seat" iBook that got a broken LCD when Southwest

made her check her bag (and she forgot the computer was in it!).  I

bought a new replacement that was a much nicer screen.  I remember it

being kind of strange and complicated to swap out, but I didn't have

any real trouble, just had to be careful of where all the parts were.
