Sounds like you`ve saved on labour too (which is like $100 an hour here!). I`ve also had troubles where they forget to return an installation DVD or power supply (lose it in the workshop!) Couriers or round trip here is expensive too. There`s always something you haven`t backed up when these things happen! Mark.

The 'pooter can boot on the CD or DVD, but the HD can
still be bad.
You can use the Disk Utility on the startup disk to
first run Disk First Aid on the HD.
That should tell you something.
If Disk First Aid doesn't work, try a more
sophisticated disk tool, like Tech Tool or something
similar.
As a last resort, you can attempt to reformat
(erase!!) the HD with Disk First Aid. If it works,
then you still have your HD but everything on it has
been overwritten. You can reinstall the OS from the
start up disk(s) and go from there.
However, I'd be in the market for a new HD, unless you
plan to upgrade from the PowerBook G4 to something
newer.
