You might want to also try out the Image Processing in Astro IIDC (select "Image Processing.." under the "Processing" menu) too for curves, levels, sharpness, noise reduction, color balance etc. It does all the processing in 16 bit too. It's discussed on pages 56 to 62 of the manual.

Astonishingly good.  The 16 bit tif lets me adjust levels in photoshop to get just the effect I was looking for.  This image was waiting for me in a folder named "Images."  I must have read the manual.
