Hi Perry,

I`ve got an external Lacie DL CD/DVD burner, actually. It`s often been indispensible! I`ve got nearly everything done now apart from the DVD burner. I may look into buying a new internal DL DVD burner sometime in the new year. The only thing is that I can`t retrieve the installation disc from the present burner because of this difficult screw. It may be a case of buying the new burner & paying for installation as well as retrieval of the swallowed disc? I have to wait a couple of days for the satellite broadband to return to full strength to do my Software Upgrades...iTunes is a rather large download these days & the new Quicktime is necessary for it`s operation...!

Mark,

You're getting the question mark because the Mac is looking for the startup disk containing the OS.

I'm gonna guess that's not on the WD replacement. It is on the HD you removed. So, that's why it works.

Regarding your optical drive, if it's truly broken or needs repair, you have two choices:

1) replace the internal optical drive with a new internal one or

2) buy an external optical DVD burner that plugs into the USB port.

I bought one of the latter to use on my Asus netbook off eBay for something like $40. It was made by Samsung and works fine. You'll need a bootable disk to install the OS onto the new drive if it isn't already there.

Good luck!!

Perry

If needed, Google "Samsung DVD burner" for sources.
