Subject: Re: [Astro_IIDC] Firewire vs usb throughput

Hi John;

Go to Wikipedia FireWire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394_interface

and scroll down towards the bottom and read the section "Comparison with USB".

The other issue is that when you begin running multiple IIDC Cameras, firewire really begins showing how much more efficient it is, especially since the transfers of data are all DMA and don't involve the CPU to do it.

As soon as you cross over to FireWire 800, USB2 looks positively anemic.

HTH..

Hi all,

I responded to a new imager about the pros and cons of firewire vs usb cameras for solar imaging on another list. I remember Milton responding saying that despite the similar bandwith specs the transfer rate is superior with the firewire protocol. Having both ports available, I  suggested the FW cam.

I searched the list but did not turn up Milton's post (sorry Milton... I know search is a sore spot 8^) . I was wondering if my memory is correct and if so, can anyone direct me to the post so I might relay this information. Of course if I am off base on this I would like to stand corrected as well.

Thanks in advance,

John
