You don't have to "try". As I said before, you can physically measure the difference between the two paths with a ruler /tape measure. If your careful, you can determine how much or little extension you need to within 5 mm.
I really am restricted to about 80 metres with land objects. Then I`ll have a look at the waxing moon ( the temptation is always to start imaging it once I`ve got a fix on it! ).
80 meters works fine. I've done that before with a nearby tree. Your imaging through the same optics so parallax is not an issue, like it would be for aligning a Finder scope and the main scope.
