Subject: Re: Venus True/False

Hi Jim;

Another possibility could be to use a Planetarium type app to get the elevation / Dec of Venus when it crosses the North south line, and the local time this occurs at. Set your scope up so it's pointing due south with the RA motors turned off and at the correct angle. About 5 minutes before it crosses over have a look through the finder scope for Venus.

This should work fine as long as the sun doesn't get too close to venus, as it's 46 degrees West of the Sun right now. But if it's less than 20 degrees separation, I'd be really careful what I'm pointing too.

Note that I am assuming one can pick Venus out from the sky background with a finder scope. I don't know if that's true or not, and I rarely see the sun due to the craptacular cloudy / foggy wet weather.

Thanks for the great discussion Milton & Alan.  Waiting until late April again for the appearance of the new Moon in the daytime sky to help locate Venus as was possible this past Monday.
