Since I still have about 18 months on my Applecare left, I am reluctant to replace the drive with something faster - like an SSD.

Replace the drive. It's not a difficult procedure: <http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Unibody-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3401/1>.

Yes, I have done this many times before in many different Macs (desktop, laptops, minis iMacs etc.). I have actually replaced the CPU in my socketed 2006 Mac Mini, as well as other parts.

If Apple sees any screw marks or anything else, your Apple Care can be voided. They specifically looked for that when I brought it in last month to replace the failing 18 month old Hard drive that ate 25 gigabytes of Venus Transit movies.

Should you need AppleCare service, just reinstall the original drive before you take it in. That said, you might want to look into the reason your internal drive is so slow. You should be able to squeeze more performance out of it.

It's a cheap 5400 rpm stock Apple Drive. That is all your going to get.
