Hi Dave;

Why would replacing the HDD with an SDD be an applecare issue?

Because Apple checks for screw marks and other indicators. If they have any suspicions you were inside it, they can void your Apple Care. When I had the drive replaced last month, they specifically looked for that in front of me when I dropped it off for repairs.

It's even worse for the Retina Macs - which are basically junkable if anything goes wrong.

I have a 15" MBP early 2011 that has applecare but replaced the hdd with an ssd sata3 512gig. Put the stock apple drive in an external Usb enclosure. And use the external drive for calibration files and large video.

Just FYI. Seagate's free agent goflex drives are external usb3 drives that gets power from the usb port.

I have a 3 terrabyte GoFlex Drive here (USB 3 dongle adapter thing) . It had severe heat issues and would freeze up until I popped the top lid (plastic basically sealed enclosures and lots of platters was a dumb idea).

Also, that will not work with an Express Card USB 3 for power. Express cards don't have enough juice (900 millamsp per spec for USB3 )  to power them (well if they used all the power rails in an Express Card they could do it - but they don't). You might be able to using two or more USB ports with a pass through USB dongle to power it.

I guess there are some power issues (well lack of) with self powered USB 3 drives and 2012 Apples Mac Airs, where the drives will not even power up unless attached via a powered Hub:

I would prefer avoiding anything mechanical storage because at -30°C or colder, the platters will start sticking. I already have my Mac tented and sitting on a heating pad to keep it from freezing up during the winter - see :

That was -28°C dead air and around -35°C with wind chill. Not that low temperatures are an issue now.

What i have found so awesome about these drives is that they have a removable usb3 to sata cable attached to the enclosure. This allows you to remove the cable and attach it to any internal sata drive and make it external usb 3.0 without the enclosure attached.  No need for eSATA to USB3.

Yes I know about that and have one here. They also offer FW 800 and Ethernet interfaces too.

I have a c orsair p3-128 ssd that i use as a bare external drive using the seagate cable attached to usb 3.   I just transfered a 1.5 gig setup file to it at 160MB/s from my RAID 10 array.

I'd love a high end internal 256 + gig SSD, but until companies start accepting bits of string and bottle caps in lew of currency, I'll have to wait until next year (lol).

Thanks for the suggestions..
