Subject: Re: [Astro_IIDC] Quitcktime is Dead in OSX 10.15

This really sucks.

I can’t tell you how many pf these free setups I have put out there through the charity with PGR cameras and Macs all over the world.  I still have 20 or so PGR cameras of my own for microscopy and astronomy and looks like no way to use them coming up as FLIR does not have any mac camera software, much less stacking software.

ASTRO IIDC was the software behind the largest solar astronomy outreach project in the world for over a decade.  It will be insurmountable to fix once this happens and people are inevitably forced to upgrade..

Hi Milton,

Thanks for sharing the heads up. Seems like it might make sense to make a hardware plan for a couple of years ahead. It’s been a great run. I can confirm that it will be hard for this old dog to learn new tricks.

Best regards,

Alan

Hi folks.

Just a heads up that QuickTime will be dead in OS X 10.15.

https://eclecticlight.co/2019/03/23/apple-is-killing-quicktime-7-in-macos-10-15-convert-old-media-now/

That means you will not be able to process any .mov files that Astro IIDC has created under 10.15 in Astro IIDC. That includes 16 bit monochrome or any color formats.

Your only option with new hardware which only runs OSX 10.15 would be to run VMWare to create an Virtual Machine and run an earlier version of OS X to run Astro IIDC in it.

If you do open an older movie (like 8 bit monochrome), Apple will convert them into a lossy highly compressed MP4 video. Anything with color will be using our Bayer codec which will be removed by Apple and therefore not playable or convertible.
