Subject: Re: [Astro_IIDC] Quitcktime is Dead in OSX 10.15

Hi Folks;

Thanks for all the kind words..

Going forward, it will get worse because Astro IIDC is a 32 bit app and Apple only wants 64 bit Apps that get sold through their Store. And of course, if Astro IIDC was in the Store, developers are so restricted we can not directly touch hardware for FireWire or USB Access, except under very special case by case Apple privileges. Apple however isn’t subject to those limitations at all.

So the only things you might be able to do future proof things is to:

1) Create a Hackintosh with an older version of OSX and lock it down so it can’t upgrade ever.

If you follow their guides (Buyers for HW recommendations) for hardware and follow their install steps, it should work pretty good. It will be what I will do in the future (probably a Mini-ITX motherboard with i5 Quad Core with USB 3.1 and a single PCI card slot for FW800 to make a Mini sized PC), especially given just how draconian Apple has gotten with their constant phone calls for 2 step verification clearance (every 2 to 3 days, I have to get a phone call to access the Apple site).

2) Look at VMWare to run a virtual box of an older version of OSX (i.e. 10.14 or less) under OSX 10.15 or higher. The issue with VMWare is going to be accessing hardware and performance, which I don’t know if that will work reliably.

Other than that, it’s pretty clear where Apple is going, especially with their announcements this week as a Service Company.
